Here we remember the fall of Constantinople, a Christian empire threatened by the Turks. The protagonist, Dracul, a knight of the Order of the Dragon who agrees to go to the battlefields to fight the Turks to attack Romania, must leave his beloved Elisabeta. The Turks, as part of its war strategy making resort to deception to believe that Dracula is dead in the war. Elisabeta resorted to suicide by not bear the suffering of living without her husband, presumed dead: choose thrown into the waters of a river. The Return of Dracula is part of a chapel where lies the body of Elisabeta, lying on the floor and surrounded by some monks. In that chapel Dracula strikes with his sword the cross from which flows blood he drinks.
The development of the plot of the movie takes place four centuries later, in 1897, when Dracula turned into a vampire and decides to leave Transylvania, where they are living in this moment, to buy land in Carfax - London. The film shows the changes that have occurred over time with the atmosphere: here street are carriages, buildings and an asylum. The central characters take on other characteristics. Elisabeth seems to be reincarnated as a woman named Mine who will soon marry her boyfriend Harker, selling real estate. Harker will travel to Transylvania because someone wants to get a house in London, the city where he lives. As a werewolf, Dracula, who is still dwelling in Transylvania, began a relationship with Lucy, a friend of mine. Dracula moves to London and meets at Mina with whom he develops a friendship. The werewolf has to Mina in the maze of the garden of the house of this. Mina Dracula falls in love but not forgotten Dracula Harker who has left abducted from his Transylvanian castle. Harker flees back to London and marries Mina. Dracula seduces Mina and possesses an act of vampirism. He is persecuted and forced to return to Transylvania, where he is chased by Van Helsing, Mina Harker and Quincy. Dracula is mortally wounded by Harker, who cuts his neck, and Quincy, who drives a sword into the heart. Mina, in an act of love, decides to kill him and thus become free.
4. Analysis. In our analysis we have taken over from the film all text and images that appear or should appear as a physical or blood as a concept, and
We interpret the blood as a symbol of interconnectedness, expressed in the film on three key ideas that converge, are interrelated and interact:
• Blood as a symbol of power.
• Blood as a symbol of life.
• Blood as a symbol of death.
Why blood as a symbol of interconnectedness? The interconnectedness in the film is manifested in different ways. Blood refers to the life and death, vampires league with those who give their blood for it to continue to live, take the blood of a vampire to a human link to immortality; drink the blood of Christ the Eternal Life League, the blood in a transfusion linked to a person to another, to generate life. For those who lose their blood is the symbol of death. During the war, spilling blood is a symbol of power.
In Coppola's version of Bram Stoker's novel blood plays a triple role, is the symbol of life and death but also the symbol of power. Blood as
idea of interconnectedness through the film from start to finish:
(03:21) The Return of Dracula war is part of an abbey where lies the body of Elisabeta, lying on the floor and surrounded some monks. He will deliver a letter stained with blood drops and written handwriting of the wife, she explains the reasons for his suicide. Expressions of mercy, concern and uncertainty on the faces of the monks, increase the anger of the man.
(1:58:02) In the final scene. Four centuries later, in the same abbey Dracula castle is bloodied, lying on the floor in the same place where he was dead Elisabeta, Mina totally sinks the sword Dracula, in the heart (blood flows from the wound) . He dies with his eyes open looking at the cross. She cries, looks, cuts the head (blood appears) and at the top get a fresh figure seems to represent both.
Harker es conducido al comedor para dinner, there is placed a portrait of someone curious about the visitor, when asked about the portrait, the count explains that it is one of your ancestors Dracul, a member of an order of knights who defended Christianity and its hidden history briefly outlined his true identity. Harker is an unbeliever and laughs. Dracula replied indignantly: "What devil or witch was so great as Attila whose blood flows through these veins?"
blood images are also used to show the relationship between the characters, Dr. Van Helsing and Dracula in the scene that happens in a minute (56:51) with the use of an image in which the junction between scenes is generated by a spot of blood.
Another scene in which the blood is a link, it happens in a relationship where there is no physical contact between Dracula and Lucy, who is in bed, it is an image of the blood cells Lucy in faster movements, which give the feeling that blood is boiling:
The Dictionary of Symbols by Jean Chevalier, the blood part of the symbolism of red. The female red, red night has a power of centripetal attraction. It is the color of the central fire of man and earth. It is the color of the soul. But the change from white to red in the dresses is the traffic between purity and their loss. This will mainly look in two scenes:
(58:14) Dr. Van Helsing arrives at Lucy's house where it is excited and dressed in red. It makes manifest the presence of Dracula: there are flowers in the room with her step wither.
(1:04:36) Mine is dressed in red dining with the Count, he remembers his beloved Elisabeta.
the previous scene in Dracula and Mina hold a dialogue in which she appears to stop being herself to become Elisabeta. Also be the color connection between the two characters.
Blood and interconnectedness between human and vampire seen in the scene in which:
(1:20:11) Dracula in werewolf form, Lucy tells him: "I sentence you to live in death, the eternal yearning of the blood of the living." The tears it devours and Lucy becomes a vampire.
The interconnectedness also can be seen in the transformation gets green mist Dracula, vampire and rats:
(1:38:53) Dracula moves in the form of green mist Mina seeks, finds and become Dracula she accepts ... At this moment she accepts, he bites on the neck, cut the breast (blood flow) and says, "Baby join me in eternal life."
(1:43:00) Men are at Mina with Dracula. She has blood in his mouth. Attempt Dracula catch but it is a picture fades and rats fleeing the area.
Blood as a symbol of power. In the first pictures where there is a race of warriors, a bloody battle ensues in which Dracula comes out the victor and the vanquished stake there is an obvious bloodshed.
Everything seems to indicate the end of the faith of Dracula, who begins to cry out for justice for the death of his wife. It shows a man in rivalry with God for the loss of his love. Seem to question God on their power and ask how it is possible that while fighting to save the empire, He will punish him in this way. Christianity a dogma of faith, believes that Jesus shed his blood for the salvation of man. Dracula takes blood from the crucifix to take power for itself:
(04:45) Dracula draws his sword and spear against the monks, frightening. The buried in a stone cross located behind the altar. When you enter the bar at the intersection of the two beams cross, the place where it receives the streams of blood erupt suddenly, too, begins to sprout from the eyes of the angels and chandeliers flooding the entire space up to the Elisabeta body. Dracula takes the chalice, places it on the altar and he collects blood that flows from the Cross, and the baby.
Spilling blood is power, power over the lives of others. Dracula makes the gesture of cutting his hand and to this fact is expected to spill blood, but this does not happen. He has the power of life and death, to decide which blood is valuable or not or whether this is due to spill or not:
(15:03) In the midst of the aggression manifested Harker, Dracula takes his sword, wields over his guest and makes the gesture of a cut on his hand, and says: "The blood is too precious at this time. Bellicose times over. " As he speaks he shows his hands on which there is no evidence of any cuts.
(1:18:10) Dracula arrives at the home of Lucy and kill the guard, but does not mind blood. In the house is taking care of Quincy.
Intimidating someone by expressing the intention of shedding their blood is another form of power. Dracula uses it in the scene where Harker is cut while shaving:
(26:15) Harker remains sequestered in the castle, increases their fear and anxiety that appears is perceived by Dracula, who mysteriously appears in the room just at the time that Harker is shaved, is cut the neck and the Count says, "Be careful, be cut. It is more dangerous than you think "secretly takes the bloody razor blade and delight your taste sucks. Intimidates Dracula Harker taking the knife and placed in the neck, says that under no circumstances even think about leaving your room. Ordered to write three letters, one to the company where he works, another to his family and another to Mina where he does not know when to report back.
Dracula's power is visible in the changes of climate, but especially the successive changes in the color of the dresses of Lucy and Mina.
(40:16) The arrival of the Count to England brings changes ranging from climate to the personality of the characters. Here show a sudden storm arises. Lucy so far has been dressed in white, now red, caught in a state of excitement runs in the middle of the storm the garden, is followed by Mina who calls her, but her friend does not seem to listen. Lucy as being owned by a force enters the maze of garden still followed by Mina. Also
power becomes apparent when in the pursuit of the vampire blood takes various forms and can act on the minds of people. This is evidenced by the obedience of Lucy, who has taken his blood, and who in dreams come to meet him even in the presence of Mina or neglect of the latter:
(42:24) The power of the Dracula turns into a werewolf. In this state has to Lucy, bites, sucks. Mine comes and watch the spectacle. The Werewolf (Dracula) feels exposed, seems to send a mental command to mine saying "No, you do not see me." Thus fades and women believe they have had a dream, something comparable with a feeling of waking nightmare . Lucy awakens from the trance with the phrase: "I still feel the taste of blood in my mouth."
Blood as a symbol of life. According to the Dictionary of Symbols by Jean Chevalier, blood symbolizes all the values of solidarity fire, heat and life which is related to the sun . At these values is associated with everything that is beautiful, noble, generous and high. The blood is universally considered as the vehicle of life. The blood for the vital and body heat, as opposed to light, which corresponds to the breath and spirit. Blood is the vehicle of passions. Blood is considered by some people as the vehicle of the soul.
Blood is life. Vg. Expressed at the beginning of the film, the act of sucking blood, "as is life, gives more life to the baby who" creates immortality. The blood-mixed with water, which flows from the wounds of Christ, contained in the grail, is the quintessential drink of immortality. Take the blood of the cross, representing, together with Christ and life, eternal life, power. In a human challenge to the divine, taking blood Dracula takes on eternal life. Blood is life, tells the biblical way. What is a fortiori in the case of Eucharistic transubstantiation. The human race is mortal but the soul having a particular place of importance. The story shows a mortal become immortal. To renounce God, which is eternal life, Dracula takes on immortality ("eternal life") but you must pay the price of having no soul, thus losing the opportunity you have in the resurrection of acquiring eternal life:
(04:45) ... Dracula takes the chalice, places it on the altar and he collects blood that flows from the Cross, and the baby.
Viewer is surprised to see that the hand is indented is not. The life blood indicates therefore that does not run is a reaffirmation of the immortality of character who is a living-dead:
(15:03) In the midst of the aggression manifested Harker, Dracula takes his sword, wields over his guest and makes the gesture of a cut on his hand, and says: "The blood is too precious at this time. Bellicose times over. " As he speaks he shows his hands on which there is no evidence of any cuts.
(33:37) However, Harker disobeys and leaves the room. Is guided by voices and whispers that lead women to a room. The walls room flats begin to sprout women seduce Harker, one of them takes away the man's neck that held the crucifix position, the gum of them sprout fangs and start to bite and suck blood in different parts of the body.
(55:38) Van Helsing is teaching a class on vampires, showing them says: "The problem is that if vampires feed on fresh blood every day, their own cells die, then comes the telegram closed class.
(56:55) Harker, who was kidnapped by Dracula in Transylvania, the castle appears, concerned about their situation and think you might not live long and referring women said: "These demons of the abyss drink my blood to weaken and can not escape." After managing to escape attempts.
(58:39) Dr. Van Helsing meets Jack in the room. The men are discussing the possibility of hypnotizing Lucy. Van Helsing says "Brands of the neck were made by something dead, but undead. Haunt us for a purpose that still do not understand. Live feeding on her blood. It's a beast, a monster. "
(1:14:19) Dr. Van Helsing thinks: "The blood of it is life." Dr. Van Helsing realizes the source of the suffering of Lucy and says, "is the cause, is what I've been looking for. This is Dracula, the undead. I've hunted all my life. "
(1:25:32) After Lucy's death, doctors go to his grave to get the heart and cut his head and thus grant him eternal rest. However, when they open the coffin realize that your body is not. Dr. Van Helsing said to be a vampire and must be wandering, "Go wandering in the darkness is a vampire, a Nosferatu. No bee die after stinging. Become strong and immortal when infecting another Nosferatu. We are not fighting a beast but legions against ancestral feeding on the blood of the living. " Lucy appears with a baby, ready to devour and the amazing men. She tries to seduce Quincy, but at the time Van Helsing shows a cross, she writhes and placed in the coffin, spitting a stream of blood. This, in the name of God, he drives a stake through the heart and cut off the head.
(1:38:53) Dracula moves in the form of green mist Mina seeks, finds and become Dracula, she accepts and he says: "There is life in this body." She replies: "But you live" -. He confesses his identity and she agrees to become a vampire, he bites on the neck, cut the breast (blood flow) and says, "Baby join me in eternal life." At the same time regret ... Mina insists again saying, "Take me through that death." Finally the count agrees and says, "I'll give you eternal life, everlasting love, the power of storms and the beasts of the earth, walk with me to be my loving wife forever."
(1:58:02) in the Abbey Dracula's castle is bloodied, lying on the floor in the same stage at the beginning of the film, where Elisabeth was dead, and says: "Where is my God? The abandoned me. Reached the end. " Mina tries to get the dagger from his heart and kisses him on the mouth. All the stage lights white light and ornaments in gold glitter. Mina says: "Even in the presence of God, I understood how my love could get rid of darkness. Our love is stronger than death. " At this time the Count rejuvenate the image of the first and says, "Give me peace." Mina totally sinks the sword he has in the heart (blood flows from the wound), and at the same time it will erase the sign of the ostia leading to the forehead. Dracula dies with his eyes open looking at the cross. She cries, looks, cuts the head (blood appears) and at the top get a fresh figure of the two.
Blood as a symbol of death. The Dictionary of Symbols by Jean Chevalier, the red, according Atermidoro, is related to the death. Red brought to light, the polarity of the symbol, female-night, it becomes male and solar. Then appears associated with white and gold, and this is the symbol of life force. Recall once again that when spilled blood means death and that red is a symbol of unity.
The red color makes a special significance given moment in history. Culturally red has been associated with feelings such as love, passion, desire, on the other hand also associated with blood, fire, which somehow represents the demonic.
To him is given a handwritten letter from the wife, the letter is stained with blood drops explains the causes of his suicide.
The blood flows from objects that are representative of religion. Remember that blood, when spilled means death. Dracula seems to be possessed by some strange force when he speaks in a language expressing an idea that is not translated into English:
(04:45) ... Dracula takes the chalice, places it on the altar and he collects blood that flows from the Cross, and the baby.
(16:22) Harker is taken to his room. The count is on the desk in the bedroom, a picture. When you try to take his shadow tomb some objects. Take your hand and the photo of Mina is attracted by it, is amazed to see that it corresponds to the image of his missing Elisabeta. Just when you take that picture, it starts to fill with blood. The shadow of the count reflects the movement of his hands closer to the neck of Harker.
(33:37) However, Harker disobeys and leaves the room. Is guided by voices and whispers that lead women to a room. Walls and floors the room begin to sprout women seduce Harker, one of them takes away the man's neck that held the crucifix position; of gums they begin to sprout fangs and suck blood and bite in different parts of the body.
(42:24) The power of Dracula makes a werewolf. In this state has to Lucy, bites, sucks. Mine comes and watch the spectacle. Man-Wolf (Dracula) feels exposed, seems to send a mental command to mine saying "No, you do not see me." Thus fades and women believe they have had a dream, something comparable with a sense of nightmare in the waking state. Lucy awakens from the trance with the phrase: "I still feel the taste of blood in my mouth."
(52:30) Lucy is sick and each day gets worse. Suitor Quincey, Jack looks a doctor friend, who examines it and says it is impossible to know what has Lucy and suggested locating a metaphysical doctor friend, Abraham Van Helsing. Quincey agree and that is how you send a telegram which read: "dear friend in agony. Unknown blood disease. Need help urgently. "
(55:38) When Dr. Van Helsing will be receiving the telegram is teaching a class on vampires and said: "Blood and blood diseases such as syphilis will be our theme. They were called venereal diseases, for Venus diseases considered of divine origin. They have to do with sexual problems where ideology Christianity is present. In fact, civilization and progressed syphilization together "...
(55:38) Van Helsing is teaching a class on vampires, showing them says: "The problem is that if vampires feed on fresh blood every day, their own cells die, then comes the telegram closed class.
(56:55) Harker, who was kidnapped by Dracula in Transylvania, the castle appears, concerned about their situation and think you might not live long and referring to women: "These demons of the abyss drink my blood to weaken and can not escape. " After managing to escape attempts.
(58:39) Dr. Van Helsing meets Jack in the room, the latter said: "It has all the symptoms of anemia, the analysis indicates health, but not well. Your picture is of blood loss but can not find the cause. " Noises in Lucy's room, who screams: "Please go to this thing." When doctors go to your room, a shadow rises and drops of blood are spilled on the table. Dr. Van Helsing Lucy looks at the neck and says she needs a transfusion and, "If the blood thickens, blood explode and die. Dying and needs blood. The will. " Artur comes and says, "Excuse me, my life is hers, would give all my blood for her. " Van Helsing replies, "All his blood, thanks. Here is welcomed. Thanks, but I'm not asking for much. " Jack says: "That poor child has blood and two men. Your body will not hold much. There is a mark on his throat. Not sick or hit. Is that the blood she lost. " Van Helsing asks: "And where was the blood?, You were a careful student. Think Where's the blood? ". Jack responds: "The sheets had blood" Van Helsing says, "Right. Do not want to see or hear what you can not explain. " Jack asks, "What if something came and sucked it and flew away?". Van Helsing replies, "Yes, why not?". The men are discussing the possibility of hypnotizing Lucy. Van Helsing says "Brands of the neck were made by something dead, but undead. Haunt us for a purpose that still do not understand. Live feeding on her blood. It's a beast, a monster. "
(1:14:19) Dr. Van Helsing reads the book "Vampire" on the Dracula story from which he draws a line: "Here comes the terrifying story of the savage Dracula. As he impaled people and roasted. As the skinned alive and cut it and then drank their blood. "
(1:18:10) Dracula arrives at Lucy's house and kill the guard, but does not mind blood. In the house is taking care of Quincy.
(1:28:33) and was found Mina Harker, who are already married, having dinner with Dr. Van Helsing, Harker who asked: "During his infidelity with those demonic women Did you test your blood?. "This says no. This Van Helsing says, "Good. His blood is not infected with this terrible disease, like Lucy "
(1:38:53) Dracula moves in the form of green mist Mina seeks, finds and become Dracula, she accepts, he confesses his identity and she understands that he killed Lucy, but despite this, he says he wants to stay with him. Dracula replied that to be together, she has to die first. At this moment she accepts, he bites on the neck, cut the breast (blood flow) and says, "Baby join me in eternal life." At the same time regret saying, "No, I can not let it be." Mina insists: "Please, I do not mind, make me yours." Dracula replies, "I can not do, as I walk in the darkness of death and I love you too much to condemn." Mina again insists, saying: "Take me through that death."
(1:46:03) Van in the train to Transylvania. Mina ill, seems to have seizures, begin to sprout fangs in her gums. Dr. Van Helsing is seduced by Mina, but reacts and says: "The vampire christened with his blood and the blood it will die." Concerns that it is useless to make a blood transfusion.
(1:56:36) Men intercept the carriage in which he is transported Dracula. He comes in the midst of a fight Harker cuts the throat (see blood). Quincy will bury a knife in the heart. Mine with a gun in his hand goes to Harker: "When my time come I'll do the same? That I do? ". Harker says no. Dr. Van Helsing said: "We finished our work, it's up to her." Annex
